Center for Fundamental Living Technology (FLinT)
FLinT is an interdisciplinary center hosted at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Southern Denmark. FLinT is exploring the interface between nonliving and living matter and developing the underpinnings for new living technologies.
Steen Rasmussen (PhD, physics) is the MATCIT Coordinator. He is also a Professor and Center Director at FLinT, an External Research Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, USA, and the founder of the international Initiative for Science, Society, and Policy (ISSP) at SDU.
Until recently, Dr. Rasmussen worked for twenty years at Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA, where also functioned as the Leader of the Self-Organizing Systems Team. Dr. Rasmussen is one of the founders of the Artificial Life movement in the late 1980s, and he is currently on the Science Board for the European Center for Living Technology in Venice, Italy, which he co-founded in 2004. http://flint.sdu.dk/index.php?page=steen-rasmussen
Martin Hanczyc (PhD, molecular biology) is an Associate Professor in Chemistry at FLinT. He received a bachelor's degree in Biology from Pennsylvania State University and a doctorate in Genetics from Yale University. He was a postdoc at Harvard and the Chief Scientist at the company Protolife srl before he came to FLinT.
Dr. Hanczyc is developing novel synthetic chemical systems based on the properties of living systems. These synthetic systems are termed 'protocells' as they are model systems of primitive living cells and minimal 'cognitive' units and they are chemical examples of artificial life. Pierre-Alain Monnard (PhD, supramolecular chemistry) is an Associate Professor in chemistry at FLinT. He obtained his PhD from ETH in Zurich, and after postdocs at UCSC and Harvard, he worked for three years as a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he established the protocell lab in Dr. Rasmussen's team.
Dr. Monnard's research expertise lies in the design and construction of self-replicating chemical systems, and their possible implementation for heterogeneous catalysis. Carsten Svaneborg (Ph.D. Physics) is an associate professor at FLint. He received his masters degree from the University of Copenhagen and a Ph.D. from the Danish Technical University. He was a post-doc at the Max Planck Institutes for Polymers in Mainz and then at the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden. Before coming to FLinT he was a Steno assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry, Århus University where he also taught a graduate level course in chemical physics of soft- matter.
Dr. Svaneborg's research expertise lies in the design and application of a variety of computational techniques to study the fundamental physics of soft-matter / complex fluids. Previously he has worked on developing scattering theory for complex self-assembled structures, and designed and applied computational techniques to study the molecular origins of viscoelasticity in dense polymeric liquids and elasticity in cross-linked elastomers.
Anders Albertsen (Ph.D. student) is working on the development of the FLinT protocell as a part of his Ph.D. thesis, the work is centered on the life cycle of the protocell. The primary focus is a comparative study of vesicles and emulsion compartments (in particular water-in-oil emulsions) during growth and division cycles. The thesis will also address the replication of nucleic acid supported by amphiphile structures like protocell container.
A. Albertsen has since September 1st 2010 worked on WP3 as a Ph.D. student.
Lone Ladegaard Laursen (MSc. in Biology) is Center Administrator at FLinT and works with project management as well as dissemination, outreach and communication. She is part of WP7 on Management and WP8 on Dissemination, exploitation and cooperation.
